Frequently Asked Questions

What do you make the kilts from?

I aim to use as much Scottish Cloth as possible, although I am happy to use UK based Mills. My favourite mills to work with include Lochcarron, House of Edgar and Marton Mills. I am happy to use Tartan, Tweed and Plain Wools. Leather is sourced on the Island to my exact specifications, and the kilts are lined with 100% cotton.

Can I have a Vegan Kilt?

Although I understand morally why some people may wish for a vegan kilt, as wool is a by product of sheep, and it is actually in the best interest of the animal to be shorn, I will always advocate for wool, a natural fibre over man

made synthetic wool which is essentially plastic and is not good for the environment at all. I understand that leather does not fall into the same category so I am happy to look into alternative closures. If you have any queries in this respect, please contact me and we can have a chat on options.

How much yardage goes into my kilt?

It depends on the cloth and the wearer. Knife pleats use more than box, some tartans have a bigger repeat, and each individual is a different size. As a rule of thumb, a gents tartan knife pleated kilt has around 8 or 9 yards, a ladies is around 4-6 yards as is a Childs. Traditional box pleats use around 4-6 yards.

How much will the kilt cost?

As I use the best quality cloth and hardware, and the kilt is almost entirely sewn by hand, the cost reflects this. The kilt is an investment and heirloom piece, ‘future proofed’ to allow for any body changes in future. The final cost will be advised at your consultation, but prices start at £550.

Can I Order something which is not a kilt?

I Absolutely! Get in touch, I would love to chat about your idea.

I would really like to incorporate a bit of my personality into my kilt, while sticking to tradition. Can I do this?

Yes! I am open to all ideas of making this special garment completely personal.

Do you do alteration?

Yes, I accept kilt alterations and repairs, as well as alterations and repairs for clothing. I do not currently do curtains or upholstery repairs, alteration or creation.
